‘Super Rookie’ Bang Shin-sil made her debut on the professional tour with a wire-to-wire victory.
Bang made two birdies and no bogeys in the final round of the Korean Ladies Professional Golf Association (KLPGA) Tour’s E1 Charity Open (KRW 900 million in prize money) at Seongmunan Country Club (Par 72) in Wonju, Gangwon Province, on Monday. Her final round total of nine-under-par 207 gave her a two-stroke victory over the next closest group.
She is the 10th player in KLPGA Tour history to record a wire-to-wire victory.안전놀이터
Born in 2004, Bang caught the eye of golf fans early on with her long drives from her 5-foot-9 frame. Her average driving distance this season is 259.6 yards.
As a conditional seed, Bangsinsil didn’t have to worry about seeding. He was ranked 40th in the Regular Tour Seeding, meaning he had to play both the First and Second Tours, but the win secured his seeding for the remainder of the season and into the 2025 season. She will be the top seed starting at the Celltrion Queensmasters.
“I was disappointed that I didn’t win the last two tournaments, but I think it was a good experience for me to win today,” said Bang.
“All of my friends and sisters who played for the national team with me are playing on the regular tour, but I’ve been struggling a lot because I wanted to go up with them,” she said. Relieved of her seeding worries, Bang said, “My original goal was to secure a seed, but it’s so good to have it already. I want to play steadily in the remaining tournaments and finish in the top 10.”
She is determined to achieve her goal by adding accuracy to her long shots. “I used to be a long hitter in the national team, but in winter training this year, I spent two and a half months working on my swing speed for an hour and a half three times a day. I gained about 20 yards. I’m not planning to increase my distance, but I want to improve my accuracy. I’m just going to put my greed aside and do my best in every tournament I play.”
