Benfica’s Gonzalo Hamus (21) is set to leave the club.
British media outlet “The Boot Room” cited a report by Rudy Galletti of British media outlet “GiveMeSports” on the 27th (local time) to address the rumours of a Hamus transfer.
“Manchester United could make a big offer for Hammers this summer,” the outlet reported, adding that “United are desperate to sign a new striker this summer”.
“United have relied on Marcus Rashford’s performances this season. They need a natural number nine who can outperform Anthony Martial and Boutinho.”스포츠토토
Galletti added: “United could make a huge offer of more than £87m to convince Benfica to let Hammers go this summer. They could get close to the release clause, which is set at £140m.”
“Given the overall cost, it’s not going to be a quick deal. It will take time.”
Hamus joined Benfica’s youth team in 2013 and has been with the club ever since. He made his first-team debut in the 2019-20 season and really started to make his mark in the 2021-22 campaign, scoring eight goals and providing four assists in 46 games, and has exploded this season with 27 goals and 12 assists in 47 games.
Notably, he is filling the void left by Darwin Núñez’s departure to Liverpool. He has thrived as Benfica’s main attacking option.
His stock rose further at the World Cup in Qatar. Hamus started all three of their group games from the bench. This was because Cristiano Ronaldo was starting.
But when the Ronaldo effect didn’t work, Portugal coach Fernando Santos gave him a start in the round of 16 against Switzerland. The mercenary move worked. Hammers was a flurry of activity throughout the match, scoring a hat-trick and providing an assist in his side’s convincing win.
His price tag is skyrocketing. “Newcastle United were prepared to pay close to £34m for Hammers last summer,” says ‘The Boot Room’. In less than a year, they could have to pay nearly three times as much.”
